The Board of Supervisors accepted the resignation of County Attorney Allister Adel today just hours after she submitted her letter. The resignation is effective Friday, March 25.
In an emergency public meeting this afternoon, Board members also called for an election to fill the upcoming vacancy, which will be held during the August Primary Election, as required by law. The candidate filing deadline is April 4 at 5 p.m. Candidates of any political party may file for the office. Forms and signatures requirements can be found at CandidateList.Maricopa.Vote.
“I appreciate Allister Adel's service to residents as the duly elected county attorney. She brought to the office fresh ideas and important reforms, including increased focus on diversion in criminal cases. In her direct interactions with the Board of Supervisors, she served us well,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates, District 3. “I believe Allister's resignation represents what is best for her, her family, the County's Attorney Office, and the criminal justice system.”
The Board will appoint a new county attorney to serve in the role until the election. State law requires this person to be a Republican like Adel. The Board of Supervisors will establish a process for appointing the new county attorney in the coming days and weeks.
