Vector Control
Maricopa County Environmental Services conducts year‐round surveillance and abatement of mosquitoes. Our Vector Control Division deploys routine mosquito traps every week and additional complaint driven traps to collect mosquitoes. Culex mosquitoes are tested for West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are tested for Chikungunya, Dengue and Zika viruses.
The Vector Control Division also investigates feral bees, fly, and roof rat complaints.
Through the years Maricopa County Environmental Services Department has developed and implemented a surveillance program where we monitor hundreds of routine sites - areas that have been identified as problem areas or mosquito-breeding sites. We deploy over 800 mosquito traps to these areas every week.
Mosquitoes have a serious impact on the health, comfort, and economic welfare of people. Some species transmit diseases to man and animals. In Maricopa County, there is particular concern with mosquito-borne encephalitis (sleeping sickness). Large numbers of mosquitoes interfere with outdoor work and recreation, cause livestock to lose weight, and lower property values.
Everyone is responsible for eliminating and preventing mosquito breeding on their property.
