Previous data indicators have been revised to align with CDC's Community Levels. CDC advises healthcare settings continue to use community transmission rates and follow CDC’s infection prevention and control recommendations for healthcare workers.

Report Footnotes

¹ 7-day case rates are calculated on Fridays using area-selected data from the most recent complete week (Sunday to Saturday). Hospital indicator data (COVID hospitalization admissions per 100,000 and percent of inpatient beds occupied by a person with COVID-19) are reported by CDC on Thursdays (please refer to CDC’s website for specific hospital metrics for Maricopa County, shown when "Data Type" is set to "Community Level"). Percent positivity is not an indicator used to determine the COVID-19 Community Level, but it is provided on the map pop-up reports by ZIP code, city, and school district. Percent positivity is calculated using area-selected data from the most recent complete week (Sunday to Saturday) and applies only to PCR tests.

**NA is reported when data are either insufficient to calculate a case rate or percent positivity or are suppressed due to small numbers.

Additional notes:

• Geographic regions with smaller populations will have case rates that vary more widely due to the small population denominator .
• The metrics for areas that cross county lines only include case, test, and population data for Maricopa County residents. These data are representative of the case rate and percent positivity for the portion of the area that is in Maricopa County and are not representative of the case rate and percent positivity for the entire geographic area.

Community Level Indicators 

Case rate

This is the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 per 100,000 people in the area selected over the week for which the data is being reported. MCDPH recommends using case rates to evaluate spread of disease in your area because a case rate will more accurately reflect what is happening in your community by accounting for population size.

Rate of New COVID-19 Hospital Admissions

The rate of new COVID-19 hospital admissions is calculated by CDC and reported weekly on Thursdays. This is the number of new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people in the last weekly within the health service area that includes Maricopa County. Percent of Hospital Beds Occupied by a Person with COVID-19 

The percent of inpatient staffed hospital beds that are occupied by a person with someone with COVID-19 is calculated by CDC and reported weekly on Thursdays. This number is the percent of inpatient staffed hospital beds occupied by someone with COVID-19 averaged over the last week within the health service area that includes Maricopa County.  For more information about how CDC calculates hospital metrics, please see CDC’s Science Brief.

Other Data

Percent Positivity

Percent positivity is not used to determine the COVID-19 Community Level, however, it is included for reference by ZIP code, city/town, and school district. This is the percentage of PCR diagnostic tests confirmed positive out of all PCR tests performed in the area selected from the most recent complete week of data.
