Maricopa County Animal Care and Control wants to provide the best possible outcome for all animals and the best possible adoption experience for all residents. Several months ago, the county announced plans to close the current east shelter with the possibility of consolidating all shelter services at the Durango location. After careful study by county staff and experts in the field, a final review has determined:
Renovating and expanding the Durango shelter to serve all stray pets in the county is possible but not prudent
A multiple-shelter approach is the best current model for Maricopa County.
The current east shelter is not a suitable long-term facility.
A new East Valley shelter should replace the Rio Salado location, while improvements to the Durango shelter are still being considered.
